Cloth diapering

We were having troubles with diaper rash and such due to what I assume was buildup in our cloth diapers. We went for such a long time with no problems and little to no maintenance on our diapers (other than regular washing). But, I guess as H has gotten older and is eating more variety, and is just a bigger boy, we had buildup (ammonia) that caused some nasty rashes. At one point we couldn't even go a week without the rash and would have to switch to disposable for a day or two until it went away. No fun for him, and for me I felt like it sort of defeated the purpose of using cloth. So... I just wanted to share with anyone out there about what we learned!

We have been using Rockin' Green (lavender mint scent). It smells great, leaves no residue, and I have done a couple soaks using it that has eliminated the buildup.
We have also been using the GroVia magic stick, which is all natural and mostly herbal (which I love). It is cloth diaper approved, leaves no white gunk on his diapers, smells nice.... We put it on H after most diaper changes and definately before nap and bedtime. This seems to help a lot!
We also just make sure to change his diaper regularly and frequently - especially in the hot and humid summer months.

With these changes, instead of the rash resurfacing before a week was over - we are now going on week 5 with no rash! Success!

So, I just had to share with anyone who might be interested.

Diaper tales

I have posted before about cloth diapering, and we still faithfully do so - and love it! For the most part, it has gone without hitch. (bumGenius diapers are fairly fool-proof) We cloth diaper over night, when we go out, the church nursery worker is on board, his babysitter is on board, both grandmothers are fluff proficient (I don't think either grandfather has ever changed a diaper yet.... wonder how they managed that!). But, every now and again there will be a slight mishap. Today was our MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) meeting, and when I dropped him off at Moppetts I told the white haired nursery worker that H is in cloth diapers and began to give my brief explanation about it, and she said "Oh, I know all about cloth diapers!" And I thought, great!

After we got home and I was changing his diaper, getting ready for nap time, I discovered how much she knew about them!

His diaper was on backwards and very loose!

It even had a piece of masking tape with his name written on it!

I don't think this style would help too much in a diaper blow-out situation!

We both thought it was very funny! He was waddling away from me as I was chasing him with my camera, and the diaper kept getting lower... and lower....

A day in the life

Good Morning, Sunshine!

Every morning, or after each nap I usually walk in to find H jumping in the corner of the crib, socks and extra pacifiers thrown on the floor, and with a big smile on his face!

Who wouldn't want to be greeted like that?

A little bit of cloth diapered cuteness!  He loves to gnaw on the drawer pulls on our armoir.  

Wearing his 'love beads' as PopHart (my Daddy) calls them.

Having a little visit over at Nanny's.  We rarely get a good picture as a family.  H was either laughing or just about to cry.... we'll go with laughing.

Our new diaper bag!  The fabric store had some new prints come in, and I just couldn't resist!!!!

Backpack style is a must for me, so I can have my hands free!   My last one that I made was larger and bulkier (it was my first diaper bag!) so I made this one a little smaller, and with many more pockets!!! Three on the outside and seven on the inside - pockets make me happy!   Now, everything won't be floating around in there, it all has it's own place.  I love fabric!!!!

I hope we have a little girl someday!!! (This is NOT an announcement!)

I made this cute little dress for N's neice's daughter.  Precious!!  You just can't do pink ruffles for a little boy!  The dress was surprisingly fast and easy - I mostly followed Amy Butler's pattern in her 'Little Stitches for Little Ones.'

(I feel like we post a lot of sleeping pictures, but they are too cute!  N and I usually peek at H before we go to bed, and he somehow always seems to be either surrounded by or on top of ALL the blankets and toys in his crib.  I wonder if it is comfortable....)

Yuck

Thankfully this only happens occasionally, but when rinsing off a stinky cloth diaper with the diaper sprayer - sometimes the sprayer will hit at just the right angle and instead of spraying into the toilet, it will hit the diaper and spray onto your foot.

Yuck.

And, I'm grateful for anti-bacterial stuff!
